My little girls keep me busy, but I always find time to sneak away to the craft room. I am dabbling in many mediums to find my true calling (but I have an inkling it will always involve fabric)...

A New Addiction

Like I have time for something new.. sheesh! But alas, I couldn’t keep away. I’m addicted to swapping again! I used to do a ton of swapping back when I was into scrapbooking. My friend recently found Swap-Bot, a website for swapping craft goodies, so now I’m hooked again! lol If you love snail mail and connecting with other crafters, you should come check it out!

I know this will be a lot of fun, but I’m also hoping it will help me start a few new adventures like doing more ATC’s, altered journals, and mixed media art. It has gotten me excited to start crafting again! (and NO, I still have yet to finish cleaning my craft room! lol)

In other news, my daughter started her cello lessons yesterday! I’m so proud and excited for her! She really likes her teacher, and she’s very excited to learn. I just hope she keeps it up. :)

An unexpected turn

Last week was crazy as hell… and its not over yet. I drove over to my parent’s new house a few times during the week and painted their bedroom a nice mustard color, and helped them move in on Saturday. I just wish they lived a bit closer, its over a 1/2 hour away. Luckily I was able to finish up my wholesale order on time because my hubby decided last minute that we were going to sneak away to Old Orchard Beach, Maine for the weekend. We had a blast, our little two year old was just loving the beach and all the lights at the carnival. She was even brave enough to try a few rides!

But, upon my return on Monday I had a message waiting for me that my life long friend past away unexpectedly on Sunday. I spent the rest of the day crying, and I still feel nauseous, but I feel like it still hasn’t even hit me with full force yet. I just can’t believe that he is gone… they’re still not even sure what happened, he sort of just died in his sleep.

The four of us as kids… Me and my sister (I’m the oldest in the back), and Jesse (in the back) and his brother.

The four of us (jesse, me, my sister, and his brother) in 2006.

So, this weekend is the wake and funeral… it will be a few days of tears for everyone I’m sure.

RIP Jesse, we love you.

It’s so hard to function when someone so close to you has past away, but I need to continue on… I have a “to do” list so long that needs finishing before my trip to Savannah on the 10th… which is coming up so fast. My mind feels like its going to explode…….. I wish I could just lay back and do nothing for a while, but its not an option with this crazy life!

Will this busyness and craziness ever settle down for a moment to give me a breather? Na, probably not; at least not for another five years or so..

Still Busy Busy Busy!

It was a long tiring weekend, and now I have a long tiring week ahead of me. Friday was so much fun, my art league set up a little booth at the Relay For Life fair and we did some face painting. We were there for about three hours and time just flew right by I was having so much fun. I hope I get a chance to do it every year! The kids were great, I only got one squirmy little one but we were still giggling together! he he Time went by so fast, I only snapped a couple pics, and I forgot to ask someone to take a pic of me! Oh well… Here’s a few:

It was so beautiful there at night, the track was surrounded by luminaries, each one dedicated to individuals who have past away from cancer. People walked allll night long. In the photo below, you can see a light stick someone was holding as they walked by, but the person was too dark for the camera to capture!

Saturday and Sunday I spent helping out my parents. They finally closed on their new home, so now they’re rushing to get some things fixed up in the home and packing up all their stuff. We were able to get a lot packed up, the carpets pulled, and the hidden wood floors sanded down and painted! Whew, we worked fast and hard all weekend, needless to say I’m pooped and my knees hurt! lol Their house is so cute, I’m in love with it! I’m so excited to help unpack and decorate!

Their moving in on Saturday, so I promised my dad I’d sneak over there this week to get their bedroom painted. Plus I have to help my mother finish packing up… then I can’t forget the large wholesale order I need to finish before the end of the month! Soooo I’ll be busy busy busy!! (As usual! lol)

Back From NY!

My hubby Dan and I decided to run away for the weekend, so we hopped on a train (after much bargaining with his mother to babysit of course! lol) and headed out. We arrived in Grand Central Station Friday evening.

We took a stroll in nearby Bryant Park, went out to eat, then slept in till about noon the next day! OH did it feel good to sleep in! I haven’t done that in years!

Saturday we just wandered about, shopping, eating, and playing in Central Park. It was nice to not have any set plans, and just do whatever we felt like doing!

That night we went to visit Times Square of course. You can’t visit NY and not go to Times Square at night! Its almost daylight bright out with all the flashing lights and signs, its amazing to see.

I got my picture taken with hello Kitty! But of course I got caught licking my lips instead of smiling! lol Oh well. She was so cute, it was a little Japanese woman and she made me make a piece sign with my fingers! he he

M&M world is HUGE! They have a three story store, with anything you can think of with the M&M logo on it!

We ended our night at this cute little place. It was very cozy and they had live jazz! We enjoyed the show while eating a huge slice of NY cheese cake. Mmmmmmm

It was so nice to be able to run away for a bit. It was a very restful weekend for my mind, but very tiring on my legs! My oldest daughter was a bit jealous because she wanted to see NY, she’s never been yet. I hope to take her this fall maybe. I can’t wait to go back! he he

Looking Up From a Bad Day

Yesterday was horrible… I dunno maybe I’m just overall stressed. I was looking forward to getting back to my painting, and it just didn’t go too well at all last night. I just wasn’t feeling it, plus I didn’t have the right paints; I just got so frustrated. I had to leave… so I decided to go to JoAnns to pick up some fabric for a wholesale order, and what do you know they stopped carrying homespun fabric! I was so upset by the time I got home, I just showered and went to bed. But my mind wouldn’t rest. My mind just feels so heavy lately. Perhaps it just the combo of my mother being in the hospital, trying to pack up their house for the move, keeping up with business work, and trying to handle my new found lost of how to handle an 8 year old girl. (More on that last one another time! lol) Plus a million other things that are still waiting patiently on my “to do” list.

Anywho, today seems to be looking brighter. It really helps to lift some weight off my mind when I write everything down and make a list of what I need to do. Also, my mom is finally leaving the hospital, although they’re still not sure what’s wrong with her. Her digestive system just doesn’t seem to be working properly and they can’t figure out why. We’re still waiting on a few more test results, and they’re going to start trying some experimental treatments until they find what works. She’s so happy to be going home though, she’s been stuck in that room for weeks, she couldn’t even go outside!

I also got my first sale on my TwiddleLee etsy page today! YeeeHaaw! I wasn’t expecting my first sale through there for a while, because I know how long it takes to create a presence on etsy, so I’m so excited! I need to get some more goodies listed, I’ve been slacking because of the lack of good weather for photos!

I’m also getting excited about buying a new sewing machine and starting up quilting. I’ve made rag quilts in the past that don’t require actual “quilting”, and I’ve also made smaller wall quilts, but I’ve never had a chance to conquer a large quilt. Partly because I could never figure out how to free motion quilt on my machine. I’ve done some research, and what I really need is a new machine. I’ve been sewing for many years now, and have made a business of it, but I have yet to buy myself a sewing machine. I know, sounds crazy, right? lol My first machine was my grandmother’s. I used that for years, until one year my mother in law decided to buy one for me for Christmas. It was a great gift, but I was sad to give up my grandmother’s machine, since she was the one who taught me to sew and she is so dear to my heart. I wish now that I still had that old machine, but I had given it to my cousin when I heard she wanted to learn to sew. Anyway, so the machine I’m using now is just a “cheapy” White machine that is very limiting. I guess it gets the job done, except now when I want to start doing free motion stuff. I’m sure it will be a while yet before I can afford the machine I want, but its fun to get excited about it! he he

What got me excited again about quilting was this tutorial I found: How To Make a Vintage Sheet Quilt. I am in LOVE with her quilt! I want one of my very own to snuggle in! I recently fell in love with crafting with vintage sheets as you may have seen from my recent projects. A pile of lovely vintage sheets just makes me all warm inside and reminds me of my childhood. I can only imagine what it would feel like snuggling up to a vintage sheet quilt! :)

I must get back to work… just breathe kristal, one step at a time! I must cross something off my list today!

Slowly but Surely!

I’ve been working every day trying to get my new goodies listed in my Twiddle Lee Etsy shop. But, its slow going. Not only am I busy taking care of my two year old all day, but now I’ve been helping my parents pack up their home for their upcoming move. My mother has been in the hospital for the past couple weeks, so they need a lot of help. She’s been vomiting a lot every day, and they still haven’t figured out why. So, if you’re one who believes in prayer, please keep her in your prayers for me. <3

I’ve also been working on new paintings for my upcoming art show this fall. No peeks to share with you yet, but soon! I’ve been having a lot of fun with grungy texture. I’m excited to see how this next painting turns out. I have some big ideas! I’m so happy I decided to join the town’s art league, its been so fun. It’s so great to get away for a couple hours every Tuesday night and just play with paint. I just need to remember my camera every once in a while! lol

Happy Easter!

I just wanted to pop in and wish you all a Happy Easter! It’s beautiful outside, time for a cookout! :) Here’s a photo of our Monster Family Easter eggs the girls and I made last night. They had a blast making them!

A Change of Scenery

We decided to run off on a mini vacation this week. I’m not exactly “rested up” but it was nice to have a change of scenery for a while. Winters can really get you down here in New England; stuck in the house day in and day out. We didn’t go far, just an hour north to Mass. We rented a cozy cottage on a (frozen) lake surrounded by trees. Being snowed in at a cottage with pine walls, huge windows, and a fireplace really cozies things up a bit and helps you enjoy the snow. I was actually excited to see the huge snowflakes falling when I woke up in the morning and looked out through the wall of glass in front of our bedroom. It was a beautiful sight! (Only wish I had the camera at that point! lol) The four of us played out in the snow and made the cutest snowman I have ever seen. The snow wasn’t sticking very well, but we were determined to build that man! Hence his short fat stature. ;0) We also visited Sturbridge Village while we were there. I always enjoy that place. Stepping back into time to enjoy the simple life. It makes you want to live there and just escape everything.

Happy Birthday to Me!

The only reason I am voluntarily announcing that I am one year older is because I received the cutest gift from my 8 year old and I just had to share! ;0) I noticed her scurrying around the house yesterday collecting things and didn’t think anything of it. She was planning a surprise. A very creative surprise I might add. I love how she all of a sudden feels a responsibility and a love for giving; I think it started this past Christmas… she had to make gifts for all of her cousins and her grandparents! Which included some handmade ornaments that were left over from our craft fair, some toys she was willing to give away, and some reindeer food (oatmeal mixed with glitter).

So anyway, she handed me a paper bag, all decorated with coloring and stickers of course! Inside was the best present an (my) 8 year old could give. I got a dragon tattoo (which I immediately put on my wrist!), a drawing, and some handmade magnets. I was so proud of her when I saw those magnets! She glued a button to one, a decorative eraser to another, and some pink ”do-dads” as we call them on another.  (Do-dads: n:Any small item that doesn’t have a purpose anymore and can be used for decorating, scrapbooking, or other crafts such as lost buttons, beads, jewels, sequins, string, small bits of pretty paper, etc.) Of course being 8 she has yet to have the chance to discover imaginative creations that are all over the net, and we have never done a magnet project ourselves… she had thought of this all on her own! Out of nowhere! Yes, she is my daughter. I’ve called her Mini-Me in the past; and I shall say it again… She is my Mini-Me! lol She has my looks, my personality, and my creativeness. :0) I love you Sweet Pea! <3

Congratulations Penelope!!!

I’m so excited for my 8 year old daughter Penelope… she put up a painting in a collaborative art show in Hartford a few weeks ago (which in itself is exciting – her first art show!) and SHE SOLD HER PAINTING!!! Her 5×5 chunky canvas of a crab using acrylics, oil pastels, and charcoal sold for $40. I’m so proud! he he

Penelope's Art Show(Sorry I don’t have a better pic of the crab painting right now!)

Even before we found out she sold her painting, she was asking me to build a website for her to sell her paintings. Now I have to! lol Her website will be at www.SweetPeaArt.com . Please visit and sign up for her newsletter to be notified of the grand opening. :0)

penelopepaint

I signed up for a small craft fair this November, and she has decided to help. So far she has made some really cute button bracelets and earrings, three paintings, and adorable little angel ornaments. She has more to sell than I do right now… I better get my butt moving! lol
